INTERNODE has signalled the beginning of the next generation of networking in Australia by upgrading its service to offer Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
According to the internet service provider, it is the first in Australia to offer native IPv6 nationally.
IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol which offers new longer IP addresses, specifically to overcome the shortage of addresses in the current IPv4 standard.
IPv4 is running out of IP numbers, with capacity estimated to be reached as soon as 2011. It is claimed moving to the new protocol will effectively “future-proof” networks.
The company says it is running its routers in ‘dual stack’ mode, meaning both IPv4 and IPv6 are currently supported, allowing customers to transition to the new address scheme in their own time.
The IPv6 protocol can be accessed through the native Ethernet for industrial customers with Ethernet/fibre connected, co-located or cross-connected networks, or through Tunnel Broker access, which is available for common broadband users.
