Ten companies join truck monitoring program

TEN telematics companies have applied with Transport Certification Australia (TCA) to become providers of a new vehicle and road monitoring technology program.

The Intelligent Access Program (IAP) is a voluntary system which monitors vehicles to ensure they are complying with access conditions.

According to the developers, this system will allow local roads administrators and freight transport operators to optimise efficiency and safety, and maximise the performance of road infrastructure. It will also provide a regulatory, contractual and operational framework to the government and transport industry.

Heavy freight vehicles such as trucks are monitored by telematics services which track their location and report associated parameters. Under the IAP, these vehicles will be granted improved access to the road network.

According to TCA, the number of telematics applications exceeded expectation. It has trumpeted this as an endorsement of the program and a sign of the industry and governments uniting to develop the reform. Sigtec has already been announced as the first IAP service provider.
