ITC Global Australia has released a whitepaper studying the role of IP-centric satellite communications in managing security risks in remote mining operations.
According to the paper, the long-term sustainability and viability of mining operations are affected by the challenges of infrastructure shortcomings. These operations require a reliable communications platform so corporate offices can exert command and control. Communications is also required in the case of emergencies.
IP-centric satellite communications is said to be flexible, and also has the capacity to deliver entertainment and personal communications facility that are needed for personnel retention.
The authors further claim the satellite systems can be used to integrate the IP-enabled mine productivity systems such as assaying, geotechnical, mine stability, and ore movement systems. These can then be monitored, tracked and protected remotely.
The paper points out other advantages to such systems such as information security, emergency management, project life cycle, and uses in training and community development.
