Information technology protects reefs, optimises shipping

AUSTRALIAN technology is allowing ships to carry heavier and bigger tonnages of cargo without impacting the Great Barrier Reef or compromising safety.
Developed by
Australian Reef Pilots, the KeelClear Safety System minimises the risk of a ship running aground and damaging sensitive reefs by providing real-time information on weather and tides.
It also collects data from sensors, buoys, beacons and GPS monitoring to provide precise information on the clearance between the keel of the ship and the seabed. It is said to use the latest electronic navigation system, and each system is custom built for the vessel it is used in.
According to the company, its technology enables cargo carriers to safely navigate through the Torres Strait and the Great Barrier Reef. It is looking to expand its market to all ships that need to travel in shallow waters anywhere in the world.
