BECKHOFF Automation has released the TwinSAFE PC-based safety programmable logic controller, integrating safety functions into automation systems through the bus terminals.
According to Beckhoff Automation, the TwinSAFE is a safety solution for its bus terminal system. Users can integrate and extend the Beckhoff Automation bus terminal system by implementing TwinSAFE safety PLC modules into the 12mm housing.
The TwinSAFE safety PLC runs on standard industrial PCs. According to Beckhoff, no hardware extension is needed within the PC, so every unit can be used as a safety PLC. The TwinSAFE safety PLC consists of software that is integrated into the TwinCAT system.
Beckhoff Automation says it decided to use PC-based technology due to the rapid development and growth of performance in PC technology. It adapted the technology to improve the performance of the machine control and increase the efficiency of the machine.
The TwinSAFE safety PLC communicates with the industrial PC, safety inputs/outputs, safety-related drives, and safety sensors through the Safety over EtherCAT protocol.
